The
NSW Government's
funding demands for installing and maintaning computers supplied as
part of the Federal government's laptops for schools program illustrates
how the purchase price of a computer is only the start.
Other costs include software, internet connection fees, paper, consumables
and power. Like a car, a computer can easily end up costing three times
the original purchase price.
We'll be breaking down the costs later in the month and we'll show
you where the expenses are and how you can reduce them. If you subscribe
to our newsletter you'll be the first to know when the stories are
on the site.
Listener's questions
As usual we had plenty of callers. If you missed out asking a question
about a computer problem, you still can at our IT
Queries website. A theme with our callers this week were problems
with Microsoft Outlook files.
Lost Outlook data
Anne-Maree asked where she can find her Outlook data file in her damaged
profile. The Outlook PST file which stores all the messages, contacts
and tasks is usually well hidden away. Microsoft have instructions on
finding it on
their website.
Repairing an Outlook data file
Warren and John asked about files stuck in Outlook folders. This is
often indicates a damaged Outlook data file which can be fixed by running
Microsoft's
Inbox repair tool.
Recycling computers
Eric asked about disposing old computers that he has sitting around
his house. This is a problem because many councils refuse computer equipment
because of the polluting heavy metals used in them.
If you are buying a new computer, then ask about the retailer's or
brand's recycling policy. They may take away the old computer for you
as part of the purchase deal.
Otherwise, we have some recycling services listed on our
links page. The Recycling Near You website can be searched by local
government area.
Whatever you do, don't even think about dropping computers off at your
local charity bin or shop unless you've called first. Stuff like this
dumped on their doorsteps is a major problem for for charities.
Dealing with Internet complaints
Margaret had an irritating problem where Bigpond keep claiming she has
gone over her monthly limit. Despite her computer being turned off, she
still finds usage is being logged on her account.
This indicates a problem with Bigpond's metering system and it's best
to nip this in the bud before it becomes expensive. We've covered dealing
with ISP disputes before and this is one of the reasons we
recommend not going with a cheaper plan.
